The restoration
area "Anklamer Stadtbruch“ is a large mire complex at
the mouth
of the Peene river covering an area of ca. 2000 ha of fen and bog
woodlands as well as former fen grasslands. Since a natural flood and
the partial breakdown of dikes in winter 1995/96 the main part of the
peatland is flooded, the land use has ceased and the vegetation
underlies heavily changes.
Today the Anklamer Stadtbruch is one of the
most impressive restoration areas in Germany. The transformation of
nutrient poor bog remnants and peat cuttings as well as
intensively
used grasslands into eutrophic swamps can be observed at a
large scale,
including the spontaneous regeneration of reed vegetation with sedges,
Cattail and Common Reed, the spacious die-off of trees and a large
number of newly invading water birds like Great White Egret and
Cormorant.
The excursion will cover the hole range of
developmental stages of the
ecosystem and will give the opportunity to discuss restoration targets
and techniques. |
