Polder Brudersdorf and Demmin: Alder afforestation and utilisation of biomass on degraded fen grasslands

Part 1: ALNUS project site

The plantation of European Alder (Alnus glutinosa) on re-waterlogged wetlands is economically and ecologically a good alternative to the intensive agricultural use. With a decreasing EU budget for agricultural subsidies, the interest of the farmers in this form of extensive land use will increase. The project ALNUS, sponsored by the DBU, explored ecological, economical and technical aspects of Alder plantations. On a pilot plot of 8 ha different planting techniques were tested. The pilot plot is situated in the Trebel-valley near Brudersdorf. It represents typical site conditions of the large river valleys in NE-Germany. Alder settlings were planted in the autumn of 2002. During the excursion advantages and disadvantages of planting techniques will be discussed.

Part 2: Biomass combustion plant Demmin

The biomass combustion plant Demmin produces electricity from biomass. For combustion normally wood is used. Currently (2005) a project is in preparation that will analyse possibilities of using biomass from rewetted peatlands (i.e. reed). Main investigations will deal with harvesting, logistics, biomass quality and technical questions concerning combustion of reed. In addition to the performance of the technical details of the plant results of the project will be presented during the excursion.
