Part
1: ALNUS
project site
The
plantation of European Alder (Alnus
glutinosa) on re-waterlogged wetlands is economically and
ecologically a
good alternative to the intensive agricultural use. With a decreasing
EU budget
for agricultural subsidies, the interest of the farmers in this form of
extensive land use will increase. The project ALNUS, sponsored by the
DBU,
explored ecological, economical and technical aspects of Alder
plantations. On
a pilot plot of 8 ha different planting techniques were tested. The
pilot plot
is situated in the Trebel-valley near Brudersdorf. It represents
typical site
conditions of the large river valleys in NE-Germany. Alder settlings
were
planted in the autumn of 2002. During the excursion advantages and
disadvantages of planting techniques will be discussed.
