Peene
Valley: Large-scale rewetted fen
grasslands |
| |
During
the excursion we wil see two different restoration sites in the valley
fen of the river
Peene. The first site will show us a large scaled
restoration of a polder, formerly in intensive agricultural use.

1: Polder Randow-Rustow
Until the late 1990’s the polder
Randow-Rustow was
intensively used as a high-productive grasland polder with dikes and
pumping stations in order to regulate water levels for optimal
agricultural use.
In the context of compensation measures for crossing the Peene valley
with the new motorway A-20 the restoration of the polder was planned.
With respect to the specific demands on the compensation measure,
resulting from the implementation of the EU-Directives
“Fauna-Flora-Habitat” and “Bird
Conservation” a simple flooding of the polder
couldn’t do. Instead a controlled rewetting over a period of
15 years was choosen in order to slowly adapt the existing, untypical
fen vegetation towards fen specific vegetation, thereby providing
numerous species of fauna a variety of different habitats.
Today, after 6 years, the restoration is on a good way.
Especially the floristic and avifaunistic results are very promising.
During the excursion the restoration will be explained and results be
shown. |

2: The species-rich meadows near
Gützkow
The Peene valley near the small city of
Gützkow is
characterised by an exciting mosaic consisting of small patches of
species-rich meadows and scattered peat holes, willow-shrubs and
elder-brooks. The meadows are of extraordinary high botanical and
zoological value, dozens of endangered species can be found, e.g. Liparis loeselii, Eleocharis
quinqueflora, Primula
farinosa, Svertia
perennis, Carex
pulicaris, Scorpidium
scorpioides, Hamatocaulis
vernicosus, Crex
crex, Lutra
lutra, Castor
fiber
and Carabus
menetriesi. In order to create more stable hydrological
conditions and to enlarge
the area characterised by calcium-rich groundwater supply several
hydrological measures were and will be taken. During the excursion we
will see two nature reserves in the vicinity of Gützkow. Both
reserves show a similar embedment in the landscape, characterised by a
steady supply of calcium-rich groundwater at the valley edge followed
by an increasing influence of flooding towards the river, but differ in
intensity of drainage and management.
