A
walk over the Zicker hills and to some salt-meadows will show the
species diversity of different landscape types which results from
traditional forms of extensive agriculture. The
morainal landscape of the Zicker hills is part of the peninsula
"Mönchgut“ in the South-East
Rügen Biosphere Reserve. This cultural landscape of
pastures and acres developed after clearing the sessile
oak-beech-woods and landusing in the 13th century.
In the eighties of
the 20th century in one part of the Zicker hills a nature protection
area was established, in another part the management intensity of
cultivation increased. Since the biosphere reserve was established in
1991 a return to traditional extensively grazing by sheeps started in
the whole area. Due to this land use combined with the climatically
determined aridity and the nutrient poverty the landscape is
dominated
by extended dry grasslands with typical species.
At lower inclination
still exist some extensively used sandy acres,
characterised by
associate vegetation of arable land with high degree of plant
diversity. On several north exposed slopes pioneer states of
wood-development can be found. At the transition area to the water
(Bodden) some salt meadows exist, conserved by cattle grazing. Starting
at the village Gager the mentioned
sites will be visited by walking cross over the
Zicker hills towards the village Zicker. |
