Degraded
ecosystems have lost species
and much of their capacity to provide the four kinds of ecosystem
services recognized by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment -
supporting, regulating, provisional and cultural. Because it is
impossible to fully restore a degraded ecosystem, and because
restoration is expensive, there are tradeoffs to be considered and
new strategies for financing to be developed. Discussions will be
held of research and practical results of (a) valuation of ecological
services, (b) financing and mainstreaming restoration, and c) linking
restoration of social capital and natural capital. Attention will
also be paid to remuneration of ecological services supplied by
revised agricultural and forestry systems, in Europe and elsewhere.
We assert that restoring natural capital goes beyond ecological
restoration per se, and that both are crucial elements of
sustainability. |
