In the realm of
nature conservation, there is a well established practice called
„restoration ecology“ to which the conference is
devoted. There is much research related to the technical and ecological
dimension of how to restore certain pieces of nature. Also economic
aspects of restoration projects are frequently addressed. Less familiar
are reflections on the underlying ethical presuppositions and on the
reasons which enable persons arguing that restoration ecology is
“good” (in some sense). This section will address
such ethical presuppositions which might be divided roughly according
to the distinction between “why restore?” and
“what to restore?”. Two hypotheses shall
be entertained: a) different concepts of environmental ethics play a
crucial but underestimated role in answering both questions,
b) ethical presuppositions also influence economic analyses
of restoration projects. |
