Faced with major
challenges such as land-use change, global biodiversity loss, invasive
species, and global climate change, ecological restoration has the
potential to become a key player in mitigating negative human impacts
on the environment. In order to do this, however, it will need tools
from ecological as well as social and economic theory. Recently we have
seen an increasing attention to feeding appropriate academic ecological
theories, such as assembly rules or succession, into the theory and
practice of restoration. The challenge here is to identify and test
those aspects of ecological theory which will be most promising as
guidelines to restoration in a world where restoration efforts will
have to increasingly address issues of global change. This session aims
to further this endeavour by including a wide range of different
approaches to linking ecological theory with restoration. |
