Many landscapes
in Europe are covered by
woodland to a large extent. The restoration and development of natural
and multifunctional forests is
one of the major tasks for forestry throughout Europe. To reach this
aim, a large variety of management strategies is practiced ranging from
intensive management (e.g. planting or sowing of trees) towards the
integration of natural processes into forest development, like natural
seed dispersal, forest succession, and spontaneous establishment of
tree specimens. This session will focus on such natural processes which
can enhance forest restoration. Additionally, the role of key species
in forest
restoration, such as short-lived pioneer species, will be discussed. |
