Research and Teaching flourish in five Faculties
The five faculties are the basic units of organization at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University of Greifswald. The Theological Faculty is traditionally the first (because oldest) in the faculty hierarchy and has been one of the most outstanding establishments for teaching and research of Protestantism in Germany since the Reformation.
The Law and Economics Faculty was re-established in 1991 and comprises law and economic sciences. The Medical Faculty is concerned with research and teaching in the field of medicine and dentistry. The Philosophical Faculty covers the wide spectrum of the arts, cultural and social sciences. Maths, natural sciences and computing are united in the Faculty for Mathematics and Natural Sciences, which was founded in 1951.

A dean, who is elected for two years by the faculty council, is responsible for each faculty. Moreover, the faculty council is responsible for the decisions on rules and regulations within the faculty and also for fundamental issues concerning the courses offered. Each of these faculty councils consists of six representatives from the group of university lecturers, two representatives from the group of academic members of staff and students and one representative from the group of further members of staff. The period of office is two years and one year for the students' representatives.
