Past and Present
The Law Faculty was in 1456 one of the original faculties of Greifswald University. Since its expansion by the addition of an Economics department in 1915, however, the Law Faculty has had the status of a Law and Economics faculty. In 1946 it was closed down by the Soviet military administration, but on the 15th June 1990 the Senate of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University decided upon the restoration of the faculty in the form in which it was abolished in 1946. The permission granted by the Ministry of Education and the Arts to add the course of Business Management for the Winter semester 1993/1994 completed the shape of the Faculty today.

As a unified faculty with two disciplines, the department hopes to promote a scientific and practically productive cooperation between Law and Economics in research and teaching. It considers itself a cooperative partner of the State's economy, institutions and organisations and is linked in with Northeast Europe's economic, legal and cultural circles by a wide range of international contacts and partnership agreements. Within the University itself, the faculty contributes to the integration of available courses through the extensive export of teaching expertise into the courses of other faculties. The Association for the Promotion of Economic Sciences at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University, composed of regional enterprises, professors, alumni and current students, is a visible expression of this living partnership.

The faculty undertakes to offer the student a course of study which, reaching beyond the confines of the mass university, offers space for individual development, personal supervision and cooperation on a partnership level. Positive rankings in the academic press, often received by the legal and economic departments for their research and teaching skills, indicate that the Faculty is on the right path.
