Theological Faculty
When in 1456 the University was founded on the initiative of the lawyer and mayor Heinrich Rubenow in Greifswald Cathedral, two professors of Theology were also present. The Theological Faculty is an original department.
Today, the Faculty comprises well over 200 students, eight professors and twelve staff. The Faculty's informal style itself has attracted some - conversations between students and with teachers alone are usually all it takes. In respect of the nature of most chairs our lecturers are 'generalists' in teaching, yet prove themselves through innovative research to be widely-prominent 'specialists'. In Biblical Studies, not only is the exegesis of the Old and New Testaments practised; the writings, culture and worship of Judaism is also reflected.

With the treasures of the Gustav-Dalman-Institute, the Faculty possesses a quite special resource for this. The specialist area of Christian Archaeology and Byzantine Art History constitutes a link between the exegetical subjects with Church History and has been a meaningful tradition in Greifswald for over 100 years. The representatives of Church History devote themselves quite directly to church contemporary history. In Systematic Theology, the question of the truth of Christian faith is the central theme. Intensive involvement with writers and literature is also practised in our Faculty to this end. Practical Theology is devoted to the body of Christianity in church and society and explores the responsible realisation of Christian existence on the basis of the Biblical message.

Practical Theology has been supported since 2004 by the newly-founded Institute for the Exploration of Evangelisation and Parish Development. The discipline of Religious Education is focussed on the scholastic and parochial areas of pedagogical practise. A new accent lies on academic engagement with the media, in particular with 'child culture on the Internet'.

The Greifswald Theological Faculty has experienced times of great difficulty and of greatness, as well as those in between. It has, though, been a constant formative influence on the life of the University, the town and the church in this region. In the new beginnings of 1945 and 1989 it has also held its own - as a dependable space of spiritual freedom. Through those teaching in the Theological Faculty, life is academically interpreted from a specific and necessary perspective: the question of the religious nature of mankind and the Christian answer to it.
