Researching Together: Collaborative Research Centres
In Collaborative Research Centres (Sonderforschungsbereich, thus: SFB), academics of varying work groups and disciplines come together. Researching together beyond subject borders enables the acquisition of further-reaching knowledge in areas defined within the SFB.
The University can at times, where Collaborative Research Centres are concerned, set up centres of excellence for the area of study in question.

Many Academics in many Places
Collaborative Research Centres don't just bring together academics from varying disciplines. Research is also carried out in other areas; be it the SFB Complex Plasmas in Greifswald and Kiel, the SFB Inflammatory Cardiomyopathy in Greifswald, Berlin and Tübingen or the SFB Coloumb Systems, Clusters and Particles in Rostock and Greifswald.

Promotion through the German Research Community (DFG)
This transregional research is, as a rule, promoted through the DFG. Promotion in the transregional areas is only successful if the contributions made by cooperative partners for the common research aim are of considerable significance, supplement themselves and are focused on synergy effects.
