An International University in the Baltic Region
Greifswald University’s internationalization strategy aims to firmly establish the university in the European research and higher education landscape and, furthermore, to form worldwide academic contacts. In its internationalization endeavours, Greifswald University puts special emphasis on the Baltic region. Excellent cooperative relations with Northern and Eastern Europe – ranging from the Euroregion Pomerania to the new EU member states and Russia – are at the heart of both Greifswald University’s tradition and future.
This orientation follows naturally from the contents and comparative aspects of many subjects dealing with the Baltic region (for example, Nordic and Eastern European history, Baltic studies, Slavic studies, European and international law, comparative law). It is also founded in already existing cooperative structures which came about through joint projects with colleagues from other universities in the Baltic region.
As the core piece of international cooperation in the Baltic region, Greifswald University maintains partnerships with 15 universities from Northern and Eastern Europe as well as Italy and Canada, in which several or all faculties or divisions of the partner universities are involved (see link on the right). A great number of researchers and students from these partner universities participate in the networks that have developed in Greifswald over the last few years (Research Training Group ‘Contact Area Mare Balticum: Foreignness and Integration in the Baltic Region’ of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), the ‘Philologica Baltica’, ‘Musica Baltica’, ‘Bibliotheca Baltica’ and ‘Colloquium Balticum’ networks).
As the first university in Germany, Greifswald University has a branch office in Hanoi in Vietnam (see link on the right). Moreover, Greifswald University takes active part in all EU programmes aiming to promote mobility of students, graduates and academics (LLP/Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, Tempus). There exist Erasmus exchange contracts with 130 higher education institutions throughout Europe (see link on the right).
