Hanoi Branch Office
As the first university in Germany, Greifswald University founded a branch office in Hanoi (Vietnam) on 25 March 2002. The foundation was preceded half a year earlier by the establishment of the Joint Educational Training Center (JETC) by Greifswald University in cooperation with Hanoi University of Science and the Institute of Biotechnology of the Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), which was part of the so-called ‘study export initiative’ (Studienexportinitiative) by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD).
The branch office's aims are twofold: For one thing, it serves as a contact point for Greifswald scientists planning research and development projects in Vietnam and its neighbour countries. Moreover, JETC offers one-year courses held by German and Vietnamese academics to prepare Vietnamese students for doing a doctorate at Greifswald University. The curriculum, which is in English, consists of general and specialist courses in the four fields of biotechnology, geosciences & environment, physics & plasma physics as well as mathematics & biomathematics. To date, four one-year courses have been successfully completed in Hanoi. The branch office is headed by Dr. Le Thi Lai. In Greifswald, Prof. Dr. Maria-Theresia Schafmeister is responsible for the project.
Students who have successfully completed the one-year course receive a three-year scholarship from the Vietnamese government to take a doctorate at Greifswald University. Since March 2003, 63 Vietnamese students have received such a scholarship. So far, 9 students have finished their doctorate successfully and have returned to their home institution in Vietnam.
The experience gained from this cooperation, which has been going on for five years now, as well as the fact that the Greifswald model has been variously copied by German and international universities (Seoul/Korea, Tokyo/Japan and Toronto/Canada) gave occasion to develop a new model that is to continue and make more independent the existing cooperation project. In doing so, Greifswald University also aims to link teaching and research in Hanoi. The most important result of these endeavours is the approval of a BMBF model project “Integrated water resources management”, which is led by Greifswald University. In particular, this project is to secure future German innovations and investments in sewage treatment facilities in North Vietnam in the long run. Although this project was launched in September 2006 only, preparations for a supplementary project are under way already. This new project will focus on water reuse and work on how to secure the refinancing potential of the investments planned for the future.
In cooperation with Hanoi University of Science, the Master's course Geosciences & Environment has been developed at Greifswald University. The MSc degree is to be jointly awarded by Hanoi University of Science and Greifswald University.
