Hartmut Lutz was born on 26 April 1945 in Rendsburg, Germany (Schleswig-Holstein).
He studied "Lehramt an Volks- und Realschulen/ Englisch" in Kiel from 1966 to 1968, and undertook postgraduate studies from 1969 to 1973 in British and American Studies to recieve his Dr. phil.
Afterwards he did various studies in the USA and Great Britain, and wrote his habilitation in Osnabrück (1983).
Guest Professor in Greifswald from 1991 to 1992. He has been professor for American and Canadian Studies in Greifswald since 1 April 1994.
His academic interests are American and Canadian literatures, minority literatures, Native American Studies and issues of race, class and gender in North America.
Prof. Dr. Lutz is also interested in traveling, meeting people in and from all over the world, Blues and Rock'n'Roll, politics and self-determination, life of plants and animals.
Hartmut Lutz has been married since 1974, and has two grown up children. During his career, he has spent more than five years abroad (USA, Canada, GB, Sweden) and the effects are still visible ;-)
