Internationalisation Strategy

In the face of increasing globalisation, demographic developments and the worldwide competition for the brightest minds and limited means for research, the University of Greifswald sees the internationalisation of research and teaching as both an obligation and a chance.

International academic standards are a prerequisite for the development of the University of Greifswald into an attractive location for research and teaching. The goal is to develop excellent, international competitive offers in both areas, which will themselves receive new impulses and quality enhancements through the international networking.

Partnerships with universities in northern and eastern Europe are one of the focal points of the University’s internationalisation. In this respect, the University of Greifswald has a bridging function in Europe. The University is also eager to adopt this role on a global scale and for developing academic nations in South East Asia (Vietnam) and South America (Brazil), who are connected historically to Greifswald.

Internationalisation is a central task for the University, its faculties and institutions. Active cooperation and strategic, institutional decisions and definitions of key fields of interest are needed in order to realise this task. Important components include the creation of research networks, the promotion of foreign language proficiency, the development of internationally attractive study courses and the international mobility of students and teaching staff.

The development concept which has been put forward and builds on the achievements to date encourages the faculties to define their own priorities for internationalisation and to assign corresponding measures.

Measures to Achieve the Objectives of Internationalisation

Based on the results of the HRK Audit “Internationalisation of the Universities” (2015), the Rectorate, following consultation at its weekly general meeting and with the Senate, has focused the current Internationalisation Strategy on individual, prioritised goals and measures.
