The University of Greifswald Underwent the Audit Procedure for Internationalisation

In 2015, the University of Greifswald faced the Audit "Internationalisation of Universities", offered by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK). As part of the audit, after establishing the current state of internationalisation, suggestions were developed for the further internationalisation of the University. The audit was financially supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

A project group, consisting of members from all faculties and status groups, was created to prepare and accompany the audit procedure, making sure that all of the important parties, structures and processes in studying and teaching, research and university management were included:

  • Prof. Dr. Johanna Eleonore Weber, Rector
  • Prof. Dr. Eckhard Schumacher, Pro-Rector for Research and International Affairs until 31/03/2015
  • Prof. Dr. Micha H. Werner, Pro-Rector for Research and International Affairs from 01/04/2015
  • Dr. Stefan Seiberling, Head of the Research Support Centre
  • Katharina Schmitt, Director of the International Office
  • Thomas Schattschneider, Manager of the Office of the Rectorate
  • Kerstin Rosenberger, Head of the Student and International Affairs Division
  • Dr. Barbara Berzel, Head of the Studienkolleg (Preparatory Courses)
  • Prof. Dr. Michael Herbst, Faculty of Theology
  • Prof. Dr. Christof Kessler, Pro-Dean University Medicine
  • Prof. Dr. Steffen Fleßa, Faculty of Law and Economics
  • Prof. Dr. Monika Unzeitig, Pro-Dean Faculty of Arts and Humanities
  • Dr. Kristian Dittmann, General Manager of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
  • Dr. Sebastiaan Werten, Institute of Biochemistry
  • Johanna Krone, Students' Union (AStA) Representative for International Affairs

The aims of the advisory procedure include using the self-evaluation created by the University and the support of the group of advisors to define and further develop a specific internationalisation profile; and the establishment of permanent internationalisation structures and processes. The nearly 400-page-long University self-evaluation was handed over to the HRK on the 20/04/2015.

The group of advisors visited the University of Greifswald between the 08/06/2015 and the 10/06/2015 and held talks with the members of the project group and further actors at faculty and management levels. The University welcomed:

  • Prof. Dr. Friederike Klippel, former Pro-Rector of LMU Munich for Studying and Teaching, former Chairperson of the University Council of the University of Erfurt
  • Dr. Sijbolt J. Noorda, President of the Academic Cooperation Association (ACA), former President of the University of Amsterdam and former Chairperson of the Association of Universities in the Netherlands
  • Dr. Margarita Calderón-Peter, Head of the Center for International Relations, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna

Using the analysis of the self-evaluation and the experiences gathered during their time at the University as a basis, the group of advisors created a recommendation report, which was discussed with the project group on the 8th December 2015 and analysed in view of further implementation steps. Following the procedure, which lasted a year, the University was bestowed with the audit's seal.
