As a student of the preparatory German course you will be enroled as a regular student. Thus you can eat cheap in the refectory, use the University's PC-pools, WiFi, Libraries and everything else. However the status as a student doesn't affect your residence status.

Students are not payed social benefits following SBG 2 (Hartz 4). However as a student of the preparatory German course you can apply for BAFöG - for the course SchülerBAFöG (504€/month) is granted by the Studierendenwerk. You won't have to pay back Schülerbafög ever, which is different from "regular" students' BAFöG. For 504€ is not quite much, the Jobcenter pays special accomodation allowance plus costs for health insurance. Thus you won't have less money than with the regular Hartz 4 during the course.

As enroled student, you can apply for a room in a dormitory at the Studierendenwerk. However there is no guarantuee for free rooms. You can find more information on accommodation here.
