Membership of the Graduate Academy is free and is possible for all doctoral students and postdocs at the University of Greifswald.
Advantages of Graduate Academy Membership
Taking part in workshops, seminars and other offers provided by the Graduate Academy is an excellent opportunity for you to widen your horizon and get to know researchers from other fields of study. The additional qualifications that you will gain will help you achieve your doctorate and other research projects successfully and on-time and pave the way for the next steps of your career. Certificates of attendance for the individual events and the final certificate verify your participation and the interdisciplinary skills that you have acquired.
The Graduate Academy’s concept also addresses the supervision agreement. This agreement is drawn up jointly by the doctoral students and their supervisors when they apply for membership at the Graduate Academy. It includes the topic of the doctoral thesis and the members of the supervisory team, as well as a schedule for completing the doctorate and the rights and duties of both parties. This document helps to clarify the content and timeframe of the various phases of the doctorate. The Promotionsordnungen (hereinafter Doctoral Regulations) of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities now suggest the parties sign a supervision agreement.

Explanation: Admission as a Doctoral Student by your Faculty
Admission as a doctoral student to any of the faculties at the University of Greifswald requires a successfully completed degree at master’s, Diplom, Magister or Staatsexamen (state examination) level. Furthermore, you need a written confirmation of supervision from a member of the University’s teaching staff. The specific admission requirements are stated in the faculties’ Doctoral Regulations.
You can download the form for admission to the faculty as a doctoral candidate here.
Our Member Groups, offering structured doctoral programmes at the University of Greifswald (e.g. DFG Research Training Groups, International Helmholtz Graduate School for Plasma Physics), have their own application and admission procedures. Please apply directly to the corresponding programme. If you have obtained a place in a structured programme, the coordinators will either inform you of the possibility of membership of the Graduate Academy or - as long as you have given them your consent - register you directly at the Graduate Academy.
Postdocs can apply for membership of the Graduate Academy for an initial period of two years. The membership can be repeatedly extended. Please apply for an extension in good time prior to the expiration of your two-year membership. You can download the membership request form here.
After completing their doctorates or the expiration of their memberships, doctoral students and postdocs can request a certificate from the Graduate Academy. The certificate lists all of the workshops, seminars and events that were attended as part of the Graduate Academy’s qualification programme.
If you would like one of these, please write an email to the Graduate Academy with
- a list of all of the courses you attended as part of the Graduate Academy’s qualification programme
- and a note as to whether you would like the certificate in German or English.
Confirmation of attendance for individual events
Irrespective of the certificate, you will receive a confirmation of attendance after taking part in individual events that belong to the Graduate Academy’s qualification programme. The confirmation details the name, type and dates of the event, as well as the name of the instructor and the key areas covered.
