VoCo – Vorpommern Connect – Evaluation and Creation of Sustainable Urban-Rural Value Chains
VoCo is an academic project that aims to improve the urban-rural relationship between the region Vorpommern and the town of Greifswald, to reduce conflicts and pave the way for potential developments. Apart from the University and Hanseatic Town of Greifswald, the bordering districts of Vorpommern-Rügen and Vorpommern-Greifswald are also taking part in the project.
Academic methods will be applied to prepare a selection of model projects for the region and supervise their implementation. The project focusses on new kinds of use and possibilities for adding value that can increase the amount of economic growth in rural areas thanks to regional processing and in turn support stable regional development.
On the one hand, the project will look at the energy recovery of raw materials from landscape conservation and paludiculture. On the other hand, the partners will investigate a stronger regionalisation in the value chains of animal and plant-based agricultural products. This includes both regional distribution and the forging of regional brands for gaining access to new supra-regional markets. Whilst investigating the value chains, the partners will pay special attention to the aspects of sustainability and environmental awareness. This underlines Vorpommern Connect’s plan to capitalise on experiences gained and network processes used by Greifswald’s agricultural initiative.
