The teaching prizes were awarded in the following areas: Fostering students’ independence, excellent supervision of students and reflective teaching. In this year’s online survey, students nominated almost 200 persons for a teaching prize. 55 members of teaching staff received three or more votes and were added to the shortlist. A jury consisting of students from all five faculties then selected the prizewinners from the shortlist.

‘I am thrilled and proud as Pro-Rector for Studying and Teaching that the University of Greifswald employs so many excellent members of teaching staff,’ said Pro-Rector Prof. Dr. Steffen Fleßa. This year’s university prizes for excellent teaching were awarded to:

- Prof. Dr. Joachim Lege, Chair of Public Law, Constitutional History, Philosophy of Law and Theory of State [de], received a teaching prize for ‘Fostering students’ independence’.

- Apl. Prof. Dr. Heiko Hüneke from the Institute of Geography and Geology [de] received the teaching prize for ‘Excellent supervision of students’.

- Prof. Dr. Mladen V. Tzvetkov from the Institute of Pharmacology [de] received the teaching prize in the category ‘Reflective teaching’.

In view of the special challenges faced by teaching during the coronavirus pandemic in summer semester 2020, the Rectorate awarded a special prize for dedication to digital teaching. This prize was awarded to Dr. Margitta Kuty (Department of British and North American Studies) and Dr. Jana Kiesendahl (Digitising Teaching at Universities [de]), who both made an outstanding contribution to digital teaching at the University. The prize money amounting to 2,000 euros will be shared between the two prizewinners.
