At the University of Greifswald’s Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, there is a job vacancy expected to be available for earliest possible appointment, subject to budgetary regulations, for a part-time (75%)

Research and Teaching Assistant.

The position on offer is limited until 31 December 2023. Payment will be made according to pay group 13 TV-L Wissenschaft.

The position within the project “Data Competency” is funded by Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The goal of the “Data Competency” project, which is affiliated to both the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Institute of Pharmacy, is to improve the ability of students from all subject areas to handle large data sets.

For this purpose – supported by resources already developed within the project – the teaching of courses is to be further improved in particular on the topics of "Statistics", "Machine Learning", "High-Performance Computing", and "Data Visualisation". In the long term, the courses are to become a fixed component in curricula taught at the University of Greifswald. Courses are attended by a broad range of participants from all faculties, who would like to enhance their skills in this subsidiary subject. The integration of state-of-the-art e-learning methods, e.g. video recordings of lectures, online exercises, and online exams, is a core component of our project.

Job description:
Your job will include providing scientific services in research (applied data science/bioinformatics) and teaching. Teaching and examination obligations will amount to 3 LVS (3 classes à 45 min. per week per semester, pursuant to LVVO M-V).

The future holder of the position will take on and further develop the courses provided in the data competency project. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in research projects at the Chair of Bioinformatics in the field of data science, especially in the analysis of eukaryotic metagenomes. The focus is on the identification of novel protein-coding genes.

The position serves to qualify academics in the first qualification phase. Tasks will be assigned that are conducive to the preparation of a doctoral thesis in the field of bioinformatics analysis of eukaryotic metagenomes.

Job requirements:
Applicants must have completed a master’s degree or Diplom in bioinformatics, data science, computer science, statistics, biology, biochemistry, or a related scientific subject, and must have acquired experience in data science.  In particular, the applicant must have good programming skills in Python. Knowledge of machine learning and genomics is also required. Experience in shell, git, JupyterHub, high-performance computing, and big data are desirable. Experience in university teaching, a high level of social and communication skills as well as enjoyment of interacting with students are desirable. Candidates must be willing to gain further qualifications, especially in the areas of e-learning and university didactics, and keen to play an active role in the university’s self-administration.
