German Marine Research Alliance (DAM)

Located on the coast of the Baltic Sea, the University of Greifswald is a member of the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM). It contributes its broad research expertise in fields ranging from ecology to zoology, microbiology, pharmacy, biochemistry, and law to marine and coastal missions and projects. The University of Greifswald collaborates with national and international partners and plays a significant role in solving regional and global challenges such as marine protection, the renaturation of marine ecosystems, marine nutrient cycles, or the degradation of plastic in the sea.

Hanse University Alliance

The Hanseatic University Alliance is currently a network of ten research-intensive universities in the North and Baltic Sea region. Together with its partners, the University of Greifswald tackles specific challenges in the North German coastal regions and pursues the following goals, among others:

  • Expand and promote transnational research cooperation.
  • Intensify transfer and become a driver of innovation in the region.
  • Create synergies in the future topics of sustainability, health, energy, the ocean, climate change and social transformation.
  • Be a driving force for regional development in the coastal region.

In order to strengthen cooperation, the Hanseatic University Alliance offers the “Impuls Forschung” start-up funding.


University Alliance (UA) 11+

The UA11+ is an alliance of 15 mid-size German universities with strong research and transfer profiles that are characterised by a special role in their regional surroundings. The UA11+ takes account of the fact that universities are taking on an increasingly important role at the interface between education and employment, as well as research and innovation. Baltic University Programme

The Baltic University Programme (BUP) is one of the largest university alliances in the world with more than 100 participating universities in the Baltic Sea region, who collaborate in the fields of education and research to approach the topics of sustainable development and democracy. Together, they foster knowledge and collaboration in the field of sustainable development and education for sustainable development (ESD). The aim is to support the establishment of strong regional education and research communities and to organise academic events for students.
