Upstairs & Downstairs

A look behind the doors of the University Collections at the University of Greifswald

The Kustodie (University Collections) of the University of Greifswald and the University Archive form their own organisational unit. While the archive collects historically important documents, makes them accessible and available for research, the Kustodie's task is to preserve the university's museum holdings and display them accordingly. This entails a whole load of work, which even the friendly courier, who actually only wanted to deliver old, freshly restored apple models, finds out for himself...

Kustodie – University Collections of the University of Greifswald

Guided Tours of the University

The Kustodie offers guided tours of the university for visitors to Greifswald and guests of the university. Student tour guides in historical robes explain interesting and entertaining facts about the Old Town campus and guide you through historical rooms such as the Aula and the Karzer (student detention cell).

Academic Art Collection

The Kustodie looks after the University of Greifswald’s mobile and immobile art holdings. This makes the history of the more than 560-year-old universityespecially vivid. The collection is a subject of research and is being digitally indexed. Furthermore, it is the task of the Kustodie to further develop the University's collection heritage in contemporary, attractive forms of mediation in the sense of an object-based knowledge infrastructure.

Digitisation of Academic Collections

The Kustodie advises the other university collections departments on all museological issues. In collaboration with the curators of other collections departments, it is developing a digital strategy for making the collection holdings usable as searchable ‘objects of knowledge'. The focus is on the 'Greifswald originals', namely the unique works of art, preparations and documents as well as the extensive type specimens of the natural science collections.
