The University of Greifswald is a member of Scholars at Risk (SAR) network since 2021. SAR is a network of over 500 universities, research institutions, and other scientific organisations in 41 countries worldwide that work together to protect and support threatened scholars and to promote academic freedom around the world.

The New York-based network supports hundreds of scientists each year through independent risk assessments to find fellowships or temporary work positions at member institutions in safe countries.

By becoming a member of Scholars at Risk, the University of Greifswald demonstrates its commitment to and responsibility for ensuring and promoting freedom of speech and freedom of scientific research locally and globally. The University of Greifswald declares therefore its willingness to host threatened scholars and academics.

The SAR activities of the University of Greifswald are coordinated through a task force that includes members from the International Office, the Welcome Centre and the Research Support Centre (ZFF). The University's contact person is Prof. Dr. Cordelia Heß, Chair of Nordic History.
