Deaths Linked to Escape Attempts across the Baltic Sea
Between November 2018 and February 2023, scholars investigated the deaths of GDR citizens who risked fleeing to the West and how the GDR Ministry of Justice abused the law against those who wanted to flee. The Forschungsverbund SED-Staat published the results of the joint project between the Universities of Greifswald and Potsdam as well as the Freie Universität Berlin.
According to new research, a total of 212 men, women and children lost their lives during GDR citizens’ escape attempts across the Baltic Sea and the Eastern Bloc borders. This includes 135 deaths in the Baltic Sea and 77 deaths at the borders of Eastern Bloc countries.
