Understanding AI: AI & Exams

The rapid development and increasing distribution of AI applications present universities with the challenge of regulating their use in the context of studies and teaching in a transparent and reliable manner. Whilst AI applications offer valuable support for academic work processes, they can at the same time raise questions regarding the originality of assessed coursework, the transparency and reproducibility of the work process, as well as compliance with the principles of good academic practice.

In order to take these developments into account and to ensure a legally compliant and consistent approach to the use of AI-supported tools, the forms for registering coursework and final theses have been revised to include provisions clearly governing the use of AI-supported tools. In addition, a declaration of consent regarding the use of AI in written assignments has been drawn up, which can be applied flexibly across all types of class that involve written assignments (e.g. lab reports, practical reports). This statement provides clarity on whether, and to what extent, AI may be used for a written assignment, and documents the relevant provisions.

In addition, the Declaration of Authorship has been revised. It now takes into account the use of AI-supported tools and helps to document the independent nature of the work and the scope of the tools used, in a transparent manner.

The forms are also available for download on the Central Examination Office’s webpages. Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Central Examination Office or the responsible Pro-Rector.
