Economic Retaliation and the Decline of Opposition Quality in Democratic Backsliding

Hanna Folsz is a 6th-year PhD Candidate in Political Science at Stanford University and a Pre-Doctoral Fellow at the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law. Her research analyzes large datasets with modern quantitative tools to study opposition movements against democratic erosion and sources of democratic resilience in East-Central Europe and Latin America.

Beginning in August 2026, she will be an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies. She will join IE University as Assistant Professor of Political Science in Fall 2027.
