Efforts Being Made to Find a Joint Solution for Adhering to Copyright Laws at Universities

At first, the aim is to guarantee the further use of the e-reserves beyond the turn of the year. Furthermore, a practical solution for respecting copyright laws in the context of teaching at German universities is to be implemented by the 30th September 2017.

The governance of the University therefore assumes that the use of the e-reserves will be possible beyond the 31/12/2016 and the measures which were considered and announced in November, in particular the deactivation of all documents in HIS and Moodle, will not have to be implemented for now.

All of the German tertiary education institutions had decided not to enter the framework contract for the use of works regulated by §52a UrhG. This had stipulated that from the 1st January 2017 onwards, each copyright protected text which had been used would have to have been documented and paid for, which would have caused an unreasonable amount of administrative effort.

The Rector of the University of Greifswald, Prof. Dr. Johanna Weber, would like to thank all of the teaching staff and above all, the students, who carried the decision of the Rectorate not to enter the framework contract readily and in solidarity. In so doing, they made an important contribution to the developments, which have meant that new feasible solutions for all parties are now being discussed.
