On 4 April 2023, Quang Trung Tran successfully defended his doctoral thesis on "The pathogenetic role of systemic bile acids and in particular the prediction, complication and prevention of acute pancreatitis". The doctor from Vietnam has been researching inflammations of the pancreas, which can sometimes be life-threatening, at the Clinic for Internal Medicine A for the last four years. "The excellent supervision and the internationally renowned research institutes made me choose the MD/PhD programme at University Medicine Greifswald. My doctorate has enabled me to obtain significant results in the field of pancreatitis research," says Quang Trung Tran.

Wiebke Mohr, who conducts research at the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Greifswald, also decided to pursue a doctorate (PhD). She was the first to be accepted into the programme at the end of 2020. She will soon submit her thesis on the topic of patient preferences in dementia care.

In the structured doctoral programme "PhD, MD/PhD, DMD/PhD" at University Medicine Greifswald, an accompanying curriculum is completed alongside the research work, which specifically develops the skills of the doctoral candidates and expands knowledge acquired during their studies. In addition to courses on scientific work and publishing activities, students attend subject-specific classes from UMG's broad range of subjects. The thesis is based on a minimum of three original publications with related content that have been published in respected scientific journals. Each doctoral procedure is supervised by its own thesis committee.

The programme started at the end of 2020 and is primarily aimed at young researchers who would like to pursue a scientific career. By awarding international doctoral degrees, doctoral candidates are ideally prepared for their future in the scientific community and University Medicine Greifswald strengthens its ability to keep pace with international competitors. 35 doctoral candidates have now been admitted to the PhD, MD/PhD or DMD/PhD; 16 of them have previously completed studies outside of Germany.
