Established music acts, such as the versatile Gitte Hænning, and exciting new discoveries from all over the North, who are starting their international careers in Greifswald, guarantee a wide range of concerts. The Faroese singer jazzygold will provide a musical taster at the Opening Ceremony in the Civic Hall on 8 May, which can then be experienced in full at the double concert on the following Pop Night. The concert will feature not only jazzygold with her ensemble, but also the Swedish band Wonders of Stevie who will play a tribute to the legendary pop and soul artist Stevie Wonder. Nordic folk music is on the programme for three days from 10 to 12 May – a festival within a festival, so to speak. Audiences become acquainted with music instruments such as the Nyckelharpa with Hedin & Meidell, or the traditional tralling vocals with Ulrika Gunnarsson and Anders Larsson. Get your dance shoes ready for the Finnish band Thalamus at the Folk Night, which will also feature the Danish band Trolska Polska who will take us to the water nymphs, kobolds, and elves at their fairy tale concert. Eurythmics in a new guise can be experienced at the Jazz Night on 13 May: the Kristin Korb Trio will give Sweet Dreams a jazzy touch. Classical music is also on offer and will be performed e.g. by the outstanding Estonian talent Tähe-Lee Liiv on the piano and in the concert showcasing the cooperation between the music schools from the partner towns of Greifswald, Kotka, and Lund.
This year’s Nordischer Klang will at last see a return to the long-cherished desire for first-class action comedy drama. The Danish theatre company Don Gnu will fill the Civic Hall with its non-verbal “Tennis” show on 14 May – highlighting the funniest sides of sport.
The Visual Klang and Knowledge Klang also form an important part of the cultural programme, providing a series of exhibitions in St. Spiritus and the gallery of the Town Hall, as well as conferences and podium discussions at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg. In collaboration with the Department of Finnish and Scandinavian Studies, discussions, readings and presentations will be held at both the Sustainable Finnish Studies conference and the Literary-Culinary Symposion.
The Nordic Vibes Night promises to be a real highlight for the senses on 15 May, featuring the soulful-explosive Estonian singer RETI and the Sami musician and joiker Hildá Länsman, who mixes traditional joik singing with electronica beats and visual arts. Nordischer Klang’s grand finale, the Closing Party, will see the Norwegian Band Giddy Gang and Inspector Spacetime from Iceland perform on 16 May.
In addition to the concert evenings, Nordischer Klang also offers a diverse programme for the kids. The Kids’ Klang includes the town library’s presentation of the film “Spread your Wings” on 8 May and the reading of Nordic stories [both in German] on the Saturday. Children will also be able to discover their own artistic talents at the Pomeranian State Museum, where they will be able to paint pictures on easels. And last but not least, various local restaurants and cafés invite their guests to enjoy Nordic cuisine during the Culinary Klang.
