Prof. Dr. Steffen Fleßa Is New Pro-Rector at the University of Greifswald

Prof. Dr. Steffen Fleßa was elected as Pro-Rector for Studying, Teaching, Further Education and Statutory Matters at the Senate’s session on the 17th November 2016. He was elected Pro-Rector by the University of Greifswald’s Senate in a secret ballot. Prof. Fleßa accepted the election and now takes up his work as Pro-Rector immediately.

The Extended Senate at the University of Greifswald held the election of the Pro-Rector as part of the session which was open to all members of the University. The professor for Business Administration was the only candidate for the election and who had been nominated by the Reduced Senate. The current Rector, Prof. Dr. Johanna Eleonore Weber, had put his name forward.

Prof. Dr. Steffen Fleßa has been professor of General Business Administration and Health Management at the University of Greifswald since December 2004. Together with his colleague, Prof. Dr. Walter Ried, he built up the successful Master’s degree course in Health Care Management at the Faculty of Law and Economics at the University of Greifswald. From April 2010 to March 2012, Steffen Fleßa was Dean of Studies and from April 2012 to March 2014 Pro-Dean of the Faculty. His research work covers the subject areas of “Health Management”, “Operations Research in Healthcare”, “Healthcare in Developing Countries” and “Management of Charitable Non-Profit Organisations”.

After studying Business Administration at the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, he was a lecturer at the Masoka Management Training Institute in Tanzania. In 1996 Steffen Fleßa gained his PhD in Erlangen-Nürnberg and then worked as an advisor to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. From 1998-2003, he was professor of Business Administration at the Evangelische Hochschule Nürnberg. Between 2003 and 2004, Steffen Fleßa was professor of International Health Economics at the Hygiene Institute of the University of Heidelberg. He gained his habilitation in February 2004 with the topics “Health Care Reforms in Developing Countries” and “Malaria and AIDS: Health Economic Analyses Based on Disease Dynamics Models”.
