Rector Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel Elected Spokesperson of the HRK Universities Member Group

Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel is set to become the new spokesperson for the Universities Member Group of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK). The microbiologist and Rector of the University of Greifswald was elected for this role on Tuesday in Berlin. In accordance with the HRK regulations, Riedel will thus also become a Vice-President of the HRK. Riedel's term of office begins on 1 December 2026.

Following the successful vote, Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel will succeed Prof. Dr. Anja Steinbeck in the position. Prof. Dr. Tanja Brühl, President of the Technical University of Darmstadt, was elected Deputy Spokeswoman of the Member Group. Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren, President of the University of Hamburg, and - newly elected - Prof. Dr. Barbara Albert, Rector of the University of Duisburg-Essen form the extended spokesperson committee. Prof. Albert succeeds Prof. Dr. Volker Epping, President of the Leibniz University Hannover, who did not stand for re-election.

The HRK's Member Groups facilitate the exchange of views on issues concerning a specific type of higher education institution. The extended spokesperson committee prepares the meetings of the Member Group and continuously represents the members’ interests in the HRK and beyond.
The HRK regulations stipulate the existence of separate Member Groups for the universities and the universities of applied sciences.
