We share the position of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) and condemn the violent action against peaceful demonstrators, in particular, the cordoning off of universities and cancellation of lectures.

We consider the Iranian Government’s violent action an infringement of human rights and a blatant violation of academic freedom and call on all responsible authorities in Iran to end the violence. Iran’s academic community has been threatened constantly in its academic freedom in these last decades, with scholars faced with disciplinary sanctions, travel restrictions and prison sentences. Currently many prisoners are in danger of being sentenced to death.

We stand in solidarity with the protest movement that started as a women’s movement, and with all the victims of the violence. In its Mission Statement, the University of Greifswald underlines its commitment to diversity and invites people of all origins and convictions to take part in academic education.
