The Department of History at the University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities is seeking candidates for the earliest possible appointment of a
Junior Professor (W1) of GDR History
(no tenure track)
The position is available subject to the approval of the funding body.
Funding for the junior professorship position was acquired in the BMFTR’s call for proposals for the funding guideline “Establishment of GDR-Related Research Foci at Universities in Germany”. It is part of the international collaborative research project being established under the umbrella of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research (IFZO), titled “Contact Zone Baltic Sea Region. The GDR and Northern Europe – Transnational Relations in (Post) Socialism”, which sees collaboration between the subject areas contemporary history, Scandinavian studies, protestant theology, and clinical psychology.
We are looking for an early-career researcher, who has completed their doctorate, and is able to represent the full scope of research and teaching in the field of GDR history. Candidates are expected to have a research focus in the history of the GDR, documented by relevant publications, and to be recognisably willing to perform interdisciplinary research. Initial experience in the acquisition of external funding is desirable.
The professor will be required to teach classes provided by the Department of History in bachelor’s and master’s degree courses, as well as teacher training degree courses. The job tasks include contributing towards the establishment of the international key field of research on the GDR, ‘Contact Zone Baltic Sea Region. The GDR and Northern Europe - Transnational Relations in (Post) Socialism’ at the University of Greifswald.

The necessary qualifications are defined in § 62(1) of the Landeshochschulgesetz - LHG M-V (State Higher Education Act): a university degree, teaching aptitude and special expertise in academic work which is generally documented by an outstanding doctoral degree. If applicants have worked as a teaching and/or research assistant or as a graduate assistant prior to or after obtaining their doctorate, the times in which they completed their doctorate and in which they were employed may not exceed a total of nine years.
In accordance with § 62(2) LHG M-V, junior professors are appointed for a period of four years as a temporary civil servant. In case of a positive evaluation after the fourth year, the contract is extended for a further two years.
This position on offer is directed at all persons, irrespective of gender. The University would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented. Furthermore, applicants are asked to submit a teaching concept (max. 2 pages) and a research concept (max. 3 pages) outlining current and/or planned research into the history of the GDR in a transnational context.
