The Institute of Geography and Geology at the University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, invites applications for a full-time position in the General Geology Group, available from 1 October 2026, subject to the availability of funds, as

Postdoctoral Teaching and Research Associate.

The position on offer is permanent and suitable for part-time employment. Payment will be made in accordance with pay group 13 TV-L Wissenschaft

The research carried out by the General Geology Group focuses on solid earth and its interaction with the hydrosphere and atmosphere. Work centres around the investigation of tectonic and sedimentological processes across various spatial and temporal scales. Methodologically, the research group adopts an integrative approach based on fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and the application and development of conceptual and physical models.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research in carbonate sedimentology, with a focus on the analysis of sedimentary archives to reconstruct past environmental and climatic conditions. Research should primarily be based on geological fieldwork and geochemical methods (main-group and trace elements, stable isotopes)
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Analyse and interpret complex geological datasets
  • Acquire external research funding and manage externally funded research projects
  • Plan, organise, and teach classes, and conduct examinations in the fields of general geology and sedimentology
  • Supervise bachelor's, master's, and doctoral theses

Required qualifications:

  • Completed university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in geosciences or a closely related discipline
  • Doctorate (PhD) in geosciences
  • Knowledge of the regional geology of Europe and Northern Germany
  • Research focus on Cenozoic systems
  • Experience in geological fieldwork
  • Expertise in the microfacies and geochemical analysis of carbonate rocks
  • Knowledge of stratigraphic methods (e.g. sequence stratigraphy and biostratigraphy)

Preferred qualifications:

  • Habilitation (or equivalent postdoctoral qualification) in geosciences
  • Good German and English language skills, as well as teaching experience at the B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels
  • Strong commitment to interdisciplinary research
  • Valid driving licence (class B or equivalent)
