The honorary doctorate honours North’s fundamental contributions towards European history, in particular the history of the Baltic Sea Region. The expert opinions underlined the worldwide reception of his works, which have been published in 15 languages and stand out due to their good readability.
The honorary doctor also recognises Greifswald’s development into the international centre for research into the Baltic Sea Region and the resulting close collaboration with the University of Szczecin. The academic led the DFG-funded research training groups ‘Contact Zone Mare Balticum’ and ‘Baltic Borderlands’ and is currently spokesperson of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research (IFZO).
In addition to working together closely with Polish academics, Professor North is a well-known scholar in the Polish academic landscape. For example, in 2019 his The Baltic: A History was published as Volume 24 of the series ‘Klio w Niemczech’ under the title ‘Historia Bałtyku’ by the publishing house Neriton. Furthermore, Professor North regularly creates reviews for Polish research support organisations, in particular the Narodowe Centrum Nauki (National Science Centre).
Professor North had previously been awarded the title of honorary doctor from the University of Tartu for his research into European economic and social history in 2014.
