Twenty-eight percent of this year’s freshers come from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Forty-three percent of the new enrolees come from former West Germany and eight percent from Berlin. 216 international students with foreign nationalities have enrolled as freshers. Currently, 10 276 students are enrolled at the university, of which 1045 come from a total of 102 different countries.

In addition to medicine and law, political science and teacher training degrees for teaching at Gymnasium (German grammar school) were particularly popular. Three new degree courses are being introduced this autumn: M.Sc. Bioeconomy, M.Sc. Infection Biology & Immunology, and the ‘Lehramt Deutsch-Polnisch binational‘ (binational German-Polish teacher training degree).

‘We are thrilled that we will be able to welcome all of our freshers in person to our University at the start of semester! This semester, we plan to provide our teaching in person and on-site and aim to re-establish the campus as a location for getting together, learning together, and social interaction,’ says Rector Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel and wishes all of the students a good start to winter semester 2022/23.

The annual Prizes for Excellent Teaching will also be awarded during the opening ceremony in the cathedral. The students were asked to submit their nominees and the prizewinners were selected by a jury.

  • Prof. Dr. Gabriele Uhl (Zoological Institute and Museum) will receive the teaching prize in the category ‘Research-Oriented Teaching’.
  • Dr. Andreas Söhnel (Outpatient Clinic for Dental Prosthetics) will be awarded the teaching prize in the category ‘Motivating Students to Work Independently’.
  • The teaching prize in the category ‘Excellent Supervision of Students’ will be shared by Orla Donnelly (Department of British and North American Studies) and Prof. Dr. Stefan Harrendorf (Chair of Criminology, Criminal Law, Law of Criminal Procedure and Comparative Criminal Law).
  • In order to honour the special services provided and extra efforts made by the subject advisors, the Rectorate also awards a special prize for excellent subject advice. This prize will be awarded to Prof. Dr. Mareike Fischer, who was particularly supportive to students on the B.Sc. and M.Sc. Biomathematics degree courses.

Following the opening ceremony in the cathedral, the University and Hanseatic Town of Greifswald will hold the ‘Cathedral Market’ for all of the new students. The various stalls make it possible for the freshers to find out more about student life and the town.

The in-person event is planned in accordance with the University of Greifswald’s Hygiene and Safety Plan. It is not compulsory to wear a face mask, but we strongly recommend all those attending wear a mask.
