Around 26 percent of the new enrolments come from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Students from former West Germany make up around 33 % of the freshers and nine percent come from Berlin. Many of the students also come from neighbouring federal states with 227 from Brandenburg, 124 from Schleswig-Holstein and 118 from Niedersachsen. 154 international students with foreign nationalities have enrolled as freshers. Currently 10,400 students are enrolled at the University. Approximately 800 of these come from a total of 88 countries.

In addition to Medicine and Dentistry, Psychology and Human Biology were particularly popular amongst the degree courses with admission restrictions. Law and Political Science are two of the degree courses without admission restrictions that were highly sought after. The master’s degree courses International Biodiversity, Ecology & Evolution and Medical Physics, as well as the bachelor’s degree course Clinical Nursing Science are new additions to the University’s study offers this autumn.

‘We are pleased we can start the semester with a considerable increase in the number of on-site teaching formats that we are able to provide in safe conditions. I would like to thank all those of you who have have shown high levels of commitment to help prepare the new semester. Surveys of our students and staff members show that more than 90 percent are fully vaccinated. In close collaboration with the District of Vorpommern-Greifswald, we have been able to organise additional vaccination days for freshers that took place in the last few days. A particularly warm welcome to all those who have enrolled at the University of Greifswald for the first time,’ says Rector Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel.

The University of Greifswald’s Hygiene Plan lays the foundation for more on-site teaching. Chequerboard seating arrangements enable a much greater utilisation of room capacities in the lecture halls and seminar rooms. Persons attending courses/events must wear masks at all times. Access to on-site seminars and lectures is only permitted to persons who are fully vaccinated, tested, or who have fully recovered from a COVID-19 infection. It remains compulsory to wear masks inside buildings.

A special thanks must go to the Students' Union (AStA). In spite of the difficulties caused by the coronavirus, the team has put together an extensive welcoming and information programme for the freshers. This included the introduction of a freshers’ forum [de] on the internet. Here, students not only find an overview of the events for freshers, but also an emergency housing forum [de] that people living in Greifswald can still use to enter details of any available student housing.
