By Bike to the Water’s Edge

Studying and living in Greifswald means: the sound of the sea, sand beneath your feet and salty sea air are never far away. Here you’ll find suggestions for bike rides that will take you straight to the shores of the Bay of Greifswald or the Baltic Sea.

Eldena Beach (Strandbad Eldena)

Eldena Beach is the nearest beach to Greifswald and can be reached from the town centre in 20 minutes. Of course you can swim here, but it’s also a great place to get some fresh sea air after a lecture or play a game of beach volleyball.

Wampen

The small natural beach in Wampen is a popular, peaceful spot to cool off, relax and let your mind wander whilst gazing out at the water. The bike route passes through the neighbouring village of Neuenkirchen and then winds its way through woods and fields. It is about seven kilometres from the town centre.

Seaside Resort of Lubmin

On a hot summer's day, the people of Greifswald like to head to the beach in Lubmin. With its five-kilometre-long sandy beach, this small seaside resort invites you to swim, play volleyball or go for a walk.

Lubmin is about 22 kilometres from Greifswald. Part of the trip will take you along the beautiful Baltic Sea Cycle Route. If you're sporty, it should take you about an hour by bike. But don’t worry: there is also a regular regional bus service.

Loissin

The small beach in Loissin is located halfway to Lubmin and is ideal for a dip in the water or a walk. If the wind is right, you’re sure to spot a few kitesurfers – or maybe you’ll even dare to get on a board yourself?

Karrendorf Meadows

Although the Karrendorf Meadows, located about 10 kilometres north-west of Greifswald, do not have a beach, they do offer an interesting landscape: a coastal flood mire.

This nature reserve is a lovely area to go for a walk and enjoy nature. Between September and November, a spectacular sight unfolds: every evening, thousands of cranes make a stopover here on their migration to the south – every single day!
