Hiddensee is of particular interest to biologists because of its high habitat diversity. The island offers a range of habitats that have become rare in our cultural landscape or have been disrupted in many places by human influences, such as eutrophication. Among these rare habitats are the salt marshes along the Bodden coast, the shore vegetation on the sandy beaches in the west of the island, sandy dry grasslands in the Dornbusch area (the northern part of the island), the coastal heaths and the shallow waters of the Bodden. A number of rare animal and plant species can be found in these areas.
You can find detailed information about the bird life on the island at the Vogelwarte Hiddensee and in volume 21 of the German Maritime Museum's publication series Meer und Museum [Sea and Museum].
