FAQs - Assessment of Examinations and Coursework

on topics such as announcement, credit points, inspection of files, remonstration and objections, failed attempts, etc.

The following information is of a general nature and does not replace students' obligations to cooperate, such as reading the relevant examination and study regulations.

When or from whom will I receive my exam results? What is binding for me?

The examination results are published online via the self-service portal after completion of the assessment procedure. The official notification is made when the semester grade sheet or certificate is sent. You will receive the semester grade sheet approximately one month after the respective semester has been completed.

Why am I not being credited with credit points even though I passed the examination(s) and coursework?

There can be various reasons for this. Sometimes it is simply due to the software, which only updates itself at certain intervals. However, the Central Examination Office can help you here. A short email or phone call is often enough.

If the examination in question only comprises a certain part of a larger examination or set of coursework, it will not (yet) be credited with credit points, depending on the examination and study regulations. However, as soon as you have passed all parts of the module, the credit points will be credited to you automatically.

Where can I view the assessments of my written examinations? Will my written examinations, coursework essays etc. be returned after the assessment?

You can view the assessments of written examinations and/or marked coursework by asking the examiners, at the office of the respective institute/department/professorial chair, or at the Central Examination Office. They can also be collected there after the objection period has passed if the Prüfungsordnung (Examination Regulations) provides for this.

You can also access the files online. Please submit a corresponding request to the responsible member of staff at the Examination Office. They will scan the assessment of the written examination and provide you with a link to view it via email.

Can I receive a copy of or photograph the assessment of my written examinations etc.?

Every student has the right to inspect their examination file and therefore also the right to inspect the assessment of their examinations and/or marked coursework. This also results in the right to have a copy made. However, depending on the circumstances, fees may be collected for this in accordance with the Gebührenordnung [de] (Fee Regulations) as amended from time to time. As a general rule of principle, it is not permitted to take photos.

What can I do if I do not agree with the result of an exam?

In such cases, you should always contact the examiner first. You can go through the examination together to check whether all the answers have been taken into account and all points awarded have been added up correctly.

Otherwise, you have the option of querying the assessment of the examination and/or marked coursework or appealing. However, you can only lodge an appeal once you have received the semester grade sheet that lists the examination and/or marked coursework being disputed. The appeal period of one month begins after you receive the semester grade sheet.

The further procedure then depends entirely on the individual circumstances. It is therefore advisable to contact the responsible member of staff at the Central Examination Office beforehand.

Why does the result of an exam appear in the self-service portal but not on the current semester grade sheet?

This is usually due to the fact that the examination result was sent to the Central Examination Office after the semester grade sheet was produced. You will also find a corresponding note on the sheet. This examination and/or marked coursework will then be automatically listed on the next semester grade sheet, meaning that all your rights are protected.

What can I do if I have the impression that an examiner is biased or that the assessment is not neutral?

If you suspect bias, document specific incidents or statements that support your suspicion. A mere feeling is not sufficient; there must be objective evidence. Whatever the situation, contact the Central Examination Office or examination board immediately, preferably before or during the examination. After the examination has been completed, it is generally possible to report (suspected) bias in the examination result, but this involves considerable hurdles.

What do I do if the grade that has been entered is incorrect?

This could be a simple transmission or typing error. Here, too, it is advisable to contact the responsible member of staff at the Central Examination Office.

Do failed attempts also count towards the overall grade?

No. Modularised degree courses are primarily about the acquisition of credits, not about achieving a specific grade. Therefore, only passed examinations and/or marked coursework are taken into account when calculating grades. However, depending on the degree course, certain assessed pieces of coursework and/or examinations are not included in the overall grade.

Do I have to use gender-sensitive language in exams? Can I be penalised in the assessment if I do not do so?

No. Although the University of Greifswald has guidelines on gender-sensitive language, these primarily apply to official university documents. There is no general obligation to use gender-sensitive language for examinations and student work. Content and technical accuracy are decisive. However, it may depend on the content and qualification objective of a module.

The overall assessment sovereignty does however lie with the lecturers. Due to their freedom to choose the content of what they teach, they can include gender-sensitive language as a formal criterion in their classes - however, this must be communicated transparently and clearly in advance (e.g. in module descriptions or assignments). Without such an announcement, deductions are not permitted simply due to a lack of gender-sensitive language.

If you want to be on the safe side, you can use neutral terms such as "students" or "lecturers".
