FAQs - Compensation of Disadvantages

on topics such as chronic illnesses, disabilities, temporary complaints, aids, etc.

The following information is of a general nature and does not replace students' obligations to cooperate, such as reading the relevant examination and study regulations.

Who can request compensation of disadvantages?

Students who are unable to take examinations and/or complete marked coursework (in whole or in part) in the intended form or only with special technical aids due to a prolonged or permanent physical disability or complaints, or due to pregnancy can submit a request for compensation of disadvantages. Compensation of disadvantages makes it possible, for example, to complete examinations and/or marked coursework within an extended writing-up period or to take equivalent examinations and/or marked coursework in a different form or with additional aids. This does not apply if this compensation contradicts the nature and content of the exam or is not suitable to compensate for the disabilities or complaints.

How can I request a compensation of disadvantages and who do I send the request to?

Students who require compensation of disadvantages must submit a justified request in writing to the Central Examination Office. The request must be addressed to the chair of the examination board. The request can also be made for a number of semesters or for the entire degree course. Suitable proof must be enclosed with the request. This is usually a doctor's certificate or a copy of the Schwerbehindertenausweis (proof that you are registered as disabled), provided that this shows the effects of the impairment on the ability to study/examine.

When do I need to submit the request for compensation of disadvantages by?

The request for compensation of disadvantages must be submitted in good time, at the latest when registering for the respective exam, i.e. during the exam registration period.

What happens after I have submitted the request?

The Central Examination Office forwards the request, provided it has been completed in full, to the chair of the examination board for the respective degree course. They will decide on the request and the type of compensation of disadvanages to grant. You will then receive notification of the decision in writing, which - depending on the type of compensation - you will present to the examiner before or during the exam. If the examination board aims to reject the request, it will speak to the Disabled Students' Officer before making a decision. You will also receive a notification in writing if your request is rejected.
