FAQs - Resits
on topics such as examination attempts, free attempts, automatic registration, etc.
The following information is of a general nature and does not replace students' obligations to cooperate, such as reading the relevant examination and study regulations.
What happens if I failed an exam? When will the resit take place?
As soon as the examiner has sent the result of the failed exam to the Central Examination Office and recorded it, it will be visible online in the self-service portal. You must register for the resit of examination yourself online. The Examination Office does not register you automatically.
Examination resits usually take place in the examination period of the following semester. If there is a second examination date in the same semester, you can be registered for this on request. Please refer to the Prüfungsordnung (Examination Regulations) for any exceptions. The exact examination date will be announced as usual via the self-service portal.
How many examination attempts do I have?
You have a total of four attempts at each exam. One possible free attempt is already included in the four attempts. (Resit) exams that you did not turn up to also count as an attempt. Please refer to the Prüfungsordnung (Examination Regulations) for any exceptions.
Can I retake an exam I have passed?
This is only possible in connection with a Freiversuch (free attempt). However, there is no free attempt for normal module examinations. Please refer to the Fachprüfungsordnung (Subject-Specific Examination Regulations) that applies to your degree course.
What happens to my resits if I am on a leave of absence?
During a leave of absence, you are generally not allowed to take any examinations and/or complete marked coursework. Registration for examination resits is therefore automatically postponed to the semester in which you resume your studies. The requirement is that you have already registered for the relevant exams as normal.
