University of Greifswald appoints Antisemitism Officer

"The appointment of an Antisemitism Officer is an important signal in light of growing antisemitic resentment in our society. We are thus taking a clear stand against all forms of hatred and committing ourselves to an open, democratic culture. We are delighted that we were able to win Prof. Dr. Beyerle for this demanding role,” said Rector Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel.

As Antisemitism Officer, Prof. Dr. Stefan Beyerle will serve as a contact and advisory point for Jewish and non-Jewish members of the university community, including both staff and students. He will also advise the Rectorate.

“An important insight to be learned from the history of antisemitism is that it is difficult to define antisemitism. And yet clear criteria are needed to combat and ban it. At the intersection of science, religion, culture and politics, antisemitism is one of the greatest threats to our free democratic order and thus also to our academic freedom," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Beyerle.

Stefan Beyerle will offer information events and academic seminars in his role as Antisemitism Officer. In doing so, he attaches great importance to networking with Jewish communities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in particular with the State Rabbi Yuriy Kadnykov, as well as other bodies working to combat antisemitism in the State. His aim is to raise society’s awareness of the narratives of antisemitism in the past and present. In addition to addressing and documenting antisemitism, the focus will be on prevention measures and events.
