The University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is seeking candidates for the position of

Junior Professor (W1) of Geographies of Transformation and Spatial Justice
(no tenure track)

for appointment by 1 October 2026. At the Institute of Geography and Geology, we conduct interdisciplinary research on the interactions between social change and geosystems under the guiding principle ‘GEO² - Human-Environment Systems in Space and Time: Understanding the Earth - Shaping Our Future’. We offer a cooperative and inspiring working environment and support you in developing your own independent research profile.

We are looking for a candidate who has proven expertise in economic or social geography or a related economic or social science discipline through a doctoral thesis and other publications. The appointment of this professorship is intended to strengthen research and teaching on transformation processes and issues of justice from a spatial perspective. As a result, your work may be focused at either global or local scale, and address economic, social, ecological, and/or (geo)political aspects of transformations. In addition, you should have strong skills in empirical methods.

The Institute's intensive involvement in the Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research (IFZO) provides particularly good conditions for international work in this region. Areas of specialisation in the Global South are also welcome.

The successful candidate is expected to be able to collaborate both within and outside the University, to actively seek third-party funding, supervise doctoral candidates, and participate in teaching, particularly in the master's degree course Regional Development – Dynamics of Spatial Transformation and in the bachelor's and teacher-training degree courses in Geography. Willingness to take on tasks in academic self-administration is a prerequisite. Experience abroad and willingness to teach in English are desirable.

The University of Greifswald supports and demands family-friendly leadership.

The necessary qualifications are defined in § 62(1) of the Landeshochschulgesetz - LHG M-V (State Higher Education Act): a university degree, teaching aptitude and special expertise in academic work which is generally documented by an outstanding doctoral degree.  If you have worked as a teaching and/or research assistant or as a graduate assistant prior to or after obtaining your doctorate, the times in which you completed your doctorate and in which you were employed may not exceed a total of nine years.

In accordance with § 62(2) LHG M-V, junior professors are appointed for a period of three years as a temporary civil servant. In case of a positive evaluation after the third year, the contract is extended for a further three years.

This advertisement is directed at all persons, irrespective of gender. The University would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented. Thus, applications from women are particularly welcome and will be treated with priority if they have the same qualifications and as long as there are no clear reasons which make a fellow applicant more suitable. Women are specifically encouraged to apply for this position. Severely disabled applicants with the same professional and personal qualifications will also be given preference.

Unfortunately, application costs (e.g. travel expenses for interviews) will not be reimbursed by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
