The Department of Sacred Music and Musicology at the University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities is seeking candidates for the earliest possible appointment of a part-time (50 %)

Professor (W2) of Musicology

The position will be available subject to the fulfilment of budgetary requirements.

We are looking for scholars with teaching experience who are able to cover the full scope of teaching and research in the subject area musicology. They should be nationally and internationally recognised experts as documented by lecturing activities, publications and involvement in research projects.

In terms of research, applicants should be in possession of broad expertise in music history and skills linked to methods used in cultural studies and in dealing with music cultures in regional, global and media contexts. Furthermore, candidates are expected to be willing to collaborate with colleagues from the field of sacred music, to contribute to the key research topics and degree courses at the Department, and to have close ties to musical practice. Applicants are also required to have experience in the acquisition of external funding and to be willing to continue the development of the teaching offers.

Candidates should be able and willing to contribute to the further enhancement of the Department’s profile through active transdisciplinary dialogue, in particular in the University’s areas of research interest in the digital humanities, gender studies, medical humanities, and/or music cultures in rural areas. They should also distinguish themselves through strong communication and teaching skills, the ability to work in a team, and management skills. The University of Greifswald supports and demands family-friendly leadership.

The teaching obligations amount to 4 LVS (classes à 45 min. per week). The Department currently offers foundational courses in the subjects musicology, music, and sacred music. Candidates are required to have extensive teaching experience in foundational, teacher-training and artistic subject areas, and must be willing to teach classes in English. They must also have gained extensive experience in academic self-government. The future position holder is expected to participate in university bodies and contribute towards the Department’s and Faculty’s internationalisation strategy.

The job specifications are defined in § 58(1) of the Landeshochschulgesetz - LHG M-V (State Higher Education Act): a university degree in musicology or equivalent degree courses, teaching aptitude and academic excellence, which is generally documented by an outstanding doctoral degree, as well as further academic achievements, which, in accordance with § 58(2) LHG M-V, are usually proven by a junior professorship, habilitation, or equivalent academic achievements.

In accordance with § 61 LHG M-V, the successful candidate will be granted a permanent contract as a public service employee.

This advertisement is directed at all persons, irrespective of gender. The University would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented. Thus, applications from women are particularly welcome and will be treated with priority if they have the same qualifications and as long as there are no clear reasons which make a fellow applicant more suitable. Women are specifically encouraged to apply for this position. Severely disabled applicants with the same professional and personal qualifications will also be given preference.

Unfortunately, application costs (e.g. travel expenses for interviews) will not be reimbursed by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
