At the Institute of Biochemistry’s Professorship for Analytical Biochemistry, which belongs to the University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, there is a job vacancy, subject to the allocation of funds, expected to be available from 01 January 2026, for a part-time position (65 %) as

Research Assistant (doctoral researcher).

The position is limited for a period of 3 years. Payment will be made in accordance with pay group 13 TV-L Wissenschaft

The successful candidate will carry out research tasks in the Analytical Biochemistry group related to the structural and biochemical analysis of protein-nucleic acid complexes relevant in gene-regulation.

Tasks:

  • Cloning and production of recombinant proteins from E. coli and of RNA by means of in vitro transcription
  • Qualitative/quantitative analyses of protein-RNA/DNA complexes using structural biology and biophysical methods
  • Independent implementation and analysis of multidimensional solution NMR measurements on proteins and/or nucleic acids
  • Determination of protein structures with and without ligands using crystallography, NMR and small-angle scattering, possibly supported by molecular modelling
  • Presentation of results in international peer-reviewed journals and at scientific conferences
  • Establishment of and looking after national and international collaborations
  • Taking on responsibility for tasks related to the management of the laboratories, e.g. maintenance of analysis devices

Required:

  • Above-average academic degree (M.Sc. or Diplom) in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology or biophysics
  • Knowledge of the cloning and production of protein and/or RNA samples for structural and biochemical studies
  • Experience in the structure determination or analysis of proteins
  • Experience in analysing protein-RNA interactions using at least one of the following methods: ITC, aSEC, FP, EMSA, SPR, CD or other biophysical methods
  • Excellent English language skills
  • High degree of independence and good teamwork skills

Desired:

  • Practical experience in the biochemical analysis of RNA structure (SHAPE, ILP)
  • Experience in the use of a synchrotron
  • Experience with small angle X-ray and/or neutron scattering
  • Driving licence
  • German language skills (B1 level or higher)
  • A determined, solution and output-oriented personality
