W2 Professor of History of Art Specialising in the Middle Ages

The availability of the position is subject to the provision of budgetary funds.

The Caspar David Friedrich Institute at the University of Greifswald consists of two sections: Fine Arts and the History of Art. We are looking for a nationally and internationally renowned academic with a specialisation in the history of art and visual culture of the Middle Ages, who is able to further develop and represent the subject area history of art of the Middle Ages in both research and teaching. Further areas of specialisation in the early early modern period (up to 1600) and architectural history are desirable. 

The teaching should focus on the full scope of methods used in art history and art theory to analyse medieval art and subsequent periods. The professor’s responsibilities include the planning and teaching of classes on the history of art of the Middle Ages in the BA and MA degree courses in History of Art. Furthermore, the position holder will also contribute towards the teacher-training degree courses for the subject Art and Design at Gymnasien (state schools up to year 12) and Regionale Schulen (state schools up to year 10).

The successful candidate’s work should be compatible with the profile of the History of Art section, in particular with regard to transcultural issues and the University’s research domain “Baltic Sea Region”. Applicants shall also be expected to participate in transdisciplinary dialogue to sharpen the profile of the Institute in the field of digital art history and to contribute towards the further development of the Faculty’s digital humanities. In addition to experience in interdisciplinary work scenarios and the acquisition of external funding, the future holder of the position will be expected to be willing to get involved in Greifswald’s Medieval Centre, to be particularly committed towards teaching, and to take part in academic self-government.

The job specifications are defined in § 58(1) of the Landeshochschulgesetz - LHG M-V (State Higher Education Act): a university degree, teaching aptitude and academic excellence, which is generally documented by an outstanding doctoral degree, as well as further academic achievements, which, in accordance with § 58(2) LHG M-V, are usually proven by a junior professorship, habilitation, or equivalent academic achievements. 

In accordance with § 61 LHG M-V, the professor appointed will be assigned the status of a civil servant with unlimited tenure (Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit); alternatively, if the applicant is not permanently available: limited tenure as a civil servant or public service employee. As a general rule, permanent tenure as a civil servant can only be awarded for the first time to persons who have not yet ended their 50th year of life when they enter employment.
