Mental Health Support

Starting your studies in a foreign country is exciting, but it can also be challenging. Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally low at times in a new environment, far from home, is completely normal – but you do not have to manage those feelings alone. Seeking help is nothing to be ashamed of.

Do you need or want to talk about what is bothering you? We offer free and anonymous online psychological counselling sessions for international students – in English and Spanish. If you are interested or curious, you can book a session.

The counselling is financed by the DAAD’s FIT programme; thus, it is free for international students. For more information about the program visit the university’s website: https://www.uni-greifswald.de/en/international/incoming/fit-programme/

What is psychological counselling?

Psychological counselling provides short-term, solution-oriented support when you are facing specific personal, academic, or emotional difficulties. It is not a form of psychotherapy and does not involve diagnosis or treatment of mental disorders. Instead, counselling offers professional guidance to help you develop strategies for coping, clarify decisions, and build confidence in managing everyday challenges.

Common topics include:

  • Studies, concentration, or motivation difficulties

  • Stress management and exam anxiety

  • Family or relationship issues

  • Homesickness or adjusting to a new environment/culture/country

  • Identity questions

Who will I be talking to?

Our psychological counsellor Mauricio Cordovez is a trained clinical psychologist with over 5 years of clinical psychology and counselling experience. After graduating from Universidad San Francisco de Quito, he came to Berlin to complete his master’s. Today, his goal is to support the international community in the field of mental health. He is a native speaker of Spanish and also fluent in English.

Counselling and therapy have core differences. It is important to note that we offer psychological counselling. It is not a form of psychotherapy and does not involve diagnosis or treatment of mental disorders. Our offer is a short-term, solution-focused support meant to give you guidance to help you develop strategies for coping, clarify decisions, and build confidence in managing everyday challenges. If you feel like you would need more assistance than psychological counselling, it would be beneficial for you to consider getting information on available therapy options.

One session is 60 minutes long.

No, they are free.

Any information you provide when booking a session or during counselling will remain confidential and will not be shared with others unless you give explicit permission.

Yes, you can provide a description of what you want to talk about in a session in the comment field in the appointment booking form. Outlining it as clearly as possible helps our counsellor better understand your problem and provide you with the right advice.

After booking a session you will receive an automated email confirming that the booking process was successful. You will receive another email 1-2 days before your session with a link to access your online session.

A trained counsellor listens, helps clarify your concerns, and explores next steps. You will be asked to explain what is bothering you and based on the information you provide, the counsellor will engage in a conversation, sometimes asking further questions to improve their understanding of your problem. You will not be forced to share anything you find uncomfortable or do not wish to talk about.

Yes, you are welcome to book more than one session. Please keep in mind that this offer is not designed to replace continuous or long-term support. We want this offer to be available to as many students seeking help as possible.

Please send an email to lisa.birkenhagenuni-greifswaldde at least 24 hours in advance.

If you cancel last minute or fail to show up more than twice, we reserve the right to block you from attending further sessions.

This counselling is solely focused on the psychological aspect, but the university also offers other specialised advisory in terms of legal, social, and financial issues. You can find more information here: https://www.stw-greifswald.de/en/social-counseling.
